On September 11, 2001, at age 32, Lance Richard Tumulty was one of the victims lost in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Lance was a tender, loving husband, doting father and friend to many. He left behind his wife, Cynthia, and his two little girls, Sara and Caroline. Lynne Devlin wrote about Lance, "Lance loved life more than most people I know. He lived life to the absolute fullest, doing everything from hunting, to motorcross, fishing and skiing. I think Shawn said it best at the funeral though, it was more than that - Lance got into your soul. His enthusiasm was more than I've ever encountered." Kate Hamm wrote, "I always knew when Lance was around because the first words out of his mouth were 'Hey Baby!'" Susan Barricella wrote, "...Lance was a fun and outgoing person, who made everyone around him feel at ease." Lin Miller said, "Lance had the biggest heart of anyone I knew. He had a tough exterior, but when you needed anything, you didn't even have to call. He would help."

He was deeply in love with his wife Cynthia. Lynne Devlin wrote, "I used to love the way Lance looked at you, like no one else in the world existed." Lance's mother-in-law said, "He was a great dad, a great, great dad." From the moment they came from the hospital, Lance adored and cared for his children. Jim Michaels wrote, "We remember the love we saw in Lance's eyes for you and your daughters, but most of all we remember Lance's humor and his ever present smile." Lance's daughter Sara was talking about her father and said, "I was hoping the angels would have brought him back to me, but the angels brought him straight up to heaven instead."

At that point - my Mom was dying from Cancer and Lance would drive me back and forth from Glassboro to Perth Amboy & back again for our games.....If it wasn't for Lance - I would have never graduated (I hated Stats - Economics & Finance) - Lances favorites!!

See - I have so many "not important" memories but things that have changed my life forever - Thanks to Lance & I wanted you to know.

MY mom too is in heaven & I am sure she met Lance at the gates - she loved how big he was & she loved his hugs more than anything.

Cynthia - I remember I spoke to Lance once after you were married (he LOVED you more than anything !) when he called me to see if I wanted a job working with him....we lost touch somehow after that - not sure how ... but we did!

I just wanted you to know how much Lance meant to sooo many people & like you I have a daughter - Emmy is only 6 - and I am sure the girls have his smile!

I wish you the best always & if there is anything I could ever do for you or your daughters - please let me know ....

10 Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew

April is Autism Awareness Month and Ellen Notbohm wrote a great list of things every child with autism wishes you knew:

1. I am a child with autism. I am not "autistic." My autism is one aspect of my total character. It does not define me as a person. Are you a person with thoughts, feelings and many talents, or are you just fat (overweight), myopic (wear glasses) or klutzy (uncoordinated, not good at sports)?

2. My sensory perceptions are disordered. This means the ordinary sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches of everyday life that you may not even notice can be downright painful for me. The very environment in which I have to live often seems hostile. I may appear withdrawn or belligerent to you, but I am really just trying to defend myself. A "simple" trip to the grocery store may be hell for me. My hearing may be hyper-acute. Dozens of people are talking at once. The loudspeaker booms today's special. Music whines from the sound system. Cash registers beep and cough. A coffee grinder is chugging. The meat cutter screeches, babies wail, carts creak, the fluorescent lighting hums. My brain can't filter all the input, and I'm in overload! My sense of smell may be highly sensitive. The fish at the meat counter isn't quite fresh, the guy standing next to us hasn't showered today, the deli is handing out sausage samples, the baby in line ahead of us has a poopy diaper, they're mopping up pickles on Aisle 3 with ammonia. ... I can't sort it all out, I'm too nauseous.

Because I am visually oriented, this may be my first sense to become overstimulated. The fluorescent light is too bright. It makes the room pulsate and hurts my eyes. Sometimes the pulsating light bounces off everything and distorts what I am seeing. The space seems to be constantly changing. There's glare from windows, moving fans on the ceiling, so many bodies in constant motion, too many items for me to be able to focus - and I may compensate with tunnel vision. All this affects my vestibular sense, and now I can't even tell where my body is in space. I may stumble, bump into things, or simply lay down to try and regroup.

3. Please remember to distinguish between won't (I choose not to) and can't (I'm not able to). Receptive and expressive language are both difficult for me. It isn't that I don't listen to instructions. It's that I can't understand you. When you call to me from across the room, this is what I hear: "*&^%$#@, Billy. #$%^*&^%$&*" Instead, come speak directly to me in plain words: "Please put your book in your desk, Billy. It's time to go to lunch." This tells me what you want me to do and what is going to happen next. Now it's much easier for me to comply.

4. I am a concrete thinker. I interpret language literally. It's very confusing for me when you say, "Hold your horses, cowboy!" when what you really mean is "Please stop running." Don't tell me something is a "piece of cake" when there is no dessert in sight and what you really mean is, "This will be easy for you to do." When you say, "It's pouring cats and dogs," I see pets coming out of a pitcher. Please just tell me, "It's raining very hard." Idioms, puns, nuances, double entendres and sarcasm are lost on me.

5. Be patient with my limited vocabulary. It's hard for me to tell you what I need when I don't know the words to describe my feelings. I may be hungry, frustrated, frightened or confused, but right now those words are beyond my ability to express. Be alert for body language, withdrawal, agitation, or other signs that something is wrong.

There's a flip side to this: I may sound like a little professor or a movie star, rattling off words or whole scripts well beyond my developmental age. These are messages I have memorized from the world around me to compensate for my language deficits, because I know I am expected to respond when spoken to. They may come from books, television or the speech of other people. It's called echolalia. I don't necessarily understand the context or the terminology I'm using, I just know it gets me off the hook for coming up with a reply.

6. Because language is so difficult for me, I am very visually oriented. Show me how to do something rather than just telling me. And please be prepared to show me many times. Lots of patient repetition helps me learn.

A visual schedule is extremely helpful as I move through my day. Like your day planner, it relieves me of the stress of having to remember what comes next, makes for smooth transitions between activities, and helps me manage my time and meet your expectations. 7. Focus and build on what I can do rather than what I can't do. Like any other human, I can't learn in an environment where I'm constantly made to feel that I'm not good enough or that I need fixing. Trying anything new when I am almost sure to be met with criticism, however constructive, becomes something to be avoided. Look for my strengths and you'll find them. There's more than one right way to do most things.

8. Help me with social interactions. It may look like I don't want to play with the other kids on the playground, but sometimes it's just that I simply don't know how to start a conversation or enter a play situation. If you can encourage other children to invite me to join them at kickball or shooting baskets, I may be delighted to be included.

9. Try to identify what triggers my meltdowns. This is termed "the antecedent." Meltdowns, blowups, tantrums or whatever you want to call them are even more horrid for me than they are for you. They occur because one or more of my senses has gone into overload. If you can figure out why my meltdowns occur, they can be prevented.

10. If you are a family member, please love me unconditionally. Banish thoughts such as, "If he would just ..." and "Why can't she ... ?" You didn't fulfill every last expectation your parents had for you, and you wouldn't like being constantly reminded of it. I didn't choose to have autism. Remember that it's happening to me, not you. Without your support, my chances of successful, self-reliant adulthood are slim. With your support and guidance, the possibilities are broader than you might think. I promise you I'm worth it.

It all comes down to three words: Patience. Patience. Patience.

Work to view my autism as a different ability rather than a disability. Look past what you may see as limitations and see the gifts autism has given me. I may not be good at eye contact or conversation, but have you noticed I don't lie, cheat at games, tattle on my classmates, or pass judgment on other people?

You are my foundation. Think through some of those societal rules, and if they don't make sense for me, let them go. Be my advocate, be my friend, and we'll see just how far I can go.

I probably won't be the next Michael Jordan, but with my attention to fine detail and capacity for extraordinary focus, I might be the next Einstein. Or Mozart. Or Van Gogh.

They had autism too.

All that I might become won’t happen without you as my foundation. Think through some of those societal ‘rules’ and if they don’t make sense for me, let them go. Be my advocate, be my friend, and we’ll see just how far I can go.

Yeah, yeah, I know guys… you’ve got this. Or so you think. But, just in case you are “curious” as Valentine’s Day gift etiquette for the ladies, have no fear. This is a simple guide to help you. Let’s start with what not to do.

1. Do Not Buy A Present For Yourself Under The Guise Of A Present For Her - I call this the “Homer Simpson Complex.” There is a classic episode of The Simpsons where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball as a present. The problem was that Marge didn’t bowl and Homer was selfishly buying a present for himself and acting like it was for her. Although the episode was hilarious, the real life situation of it is… not so much. I know of a husband who bought the wife a present of a DVD of the show Two and a Half Men. The husband was a fan of the show but he bought it under the guise of a present for the wife but it was really for him (and Charlie Sheen’s coke habit.) Basically, this is a cad move. It’s a short term reward for the guy but ultimately he’s messing with his marital sex life. This is both foolish and detrimental to any happy ending.

2. Do Not Buy A Sexist Present - I have to admit, I would dig it but I think I’m an exception. I get giddy about steam mops, irons, ironing boards, etc. But, as a general rule, do not buy something for her to clean with. Unless, you are offering to clean forevermore. That changes the whole ballgame.

3. Do Not Buy A Stuffed Animal - Seriously? A stuffed animal? Just give me cash at this point because clearly the guy has given up on trying. If I wanted a stuffed animal, there are plenty of them at garage sales. Stuffed animals that reek of forsaken love from men who have given them to their beloveds. Trust me, just don’t do it.

So, that leaves us here. What do you give your goddess divine? I think these gifts are fail proof.

1. Chocolate - I know what you are thinking… this is generic, not original, etc. Who cares?!?! The old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Chocolate is this. Chocolate is to women what bacon is to men. It is our soul song, it is our release, it is our love. By the way, if your beloved is of the alcoholic nature, you might want to check out Godiva’s new chocolate infused vodka. I received an email from Godiva and am giddy to try it.

2. Something Sexy - Yes. Victoria’s Secret (because they are out for my destruction) is offering *free* Godiva chocolate with a $75 purchase. They just whacked two birds with one delicious chocolate-y stone. So get her something soft, silky, and sexy. She’ll love it.

3. Offer To Do Something - Whether it’s watching the kids for the night so she can go out or cleaning or a foot massage. This means more to a woman than any stuffed animal, or chocolate, or lingerie. If you are giving your time for her and her needs, it sends her that la-la-la message of love.

4. Write Her A Love Note - Write what you love about her or reminisce about how the two of you met. My Dad, who has been married for 40 years, does this all the time with my Mom. He doesn’t like to spend money but he is really into sentimental things. My Mom digs it and they have four children so I know he’s scored at least four times with her. Chicks are suckers for love, so it means more to them to have you express it than to just spend money. However a love note combined *with* a gift doesn’t hurt. ;)

God's Gift of Free Will

I’m not a theologian, not by any means. I’m only a huge receiver of God’s love, mercy, and grace. That all comes together in a nicely wrapped package because of God giving me the gift of free will. I recently saw the movie When In Rome, and for whatever reason, it reminded me of free will, salvation, and God. (Movie Spoiler Ahead.) In the movie, the main character grabs coins from a "magical" water fountain and the men who threw the coins in the fountain previously fell madly in love with her. She ends up falling in love with one of the men. She is then conflicted with the option of having him against his will and under the spell. Or she can give him back the coin and see if he sincerely loves her back. She decides to give him the coin back. This is the heart of God. There is no way to know if the love is sincere unless the person really falls in love freely with his/her mind, body, and soul. A beloved analogy from Kierkegaard goes like this:

“Suppose there was a king who loved a humble maiden...

The king was like no other king. Every statesman trembled before his power. No one dared breathe a word against him, for he had the strength to crush all opponents. And yet this mighty king was melted by love for a humble maiden. How could he declare his love for her? In an odd sort of way, his kingliness tied his hands. If he brought her to the palace and crowned her head with jewels and clothed her body in royal robes, she would surely not resist – no one dared resist him. But would she love him?

She would say she loved him, or course, but would she truly? Or would she live with him in fear, nursing a private grief for the life she had left behind? Would she be happy at his side? How could he know? If he rode to her forest cottage in his royal carriage, with an armed escort waving bright banners, that too would overwhelm her. He did not want a cringing subject. He wanted a lover, an equal. He wanted her to forget that he was a king and she a humble maiden and to let shared love cross the gulf between them. For its only in love that the unequal can be made equal.

He had to find a way to win the maiden’s love without overwhelming her and without destroying her free will to choose. The king realized that to win the maiden’s love, he had only one choice. He had to become like her, without power or riches and without the title of king. Only then would she be able to see him simply for who he was and not for what his position made him. He had to become her equal, and to do this he must leave all that he had."

This is exactly what God did. He left heaven. He came down to earth, was born in hay like an animal, lived as a poor carpenter's son, and did not do one miracle for Himself. He wooed the world. Not by might, not by force, but by love and grace. God demands justice for all the evil in the world and the payment is paid through the death of His Son. God sacrificed Himself so that I may live and my soul will never die.

James Emery White wrote about the Kierkegaard analogy: "Yes, this is the heart of God, and He is on just such a mission. But the deeper truth lies in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. We are not a beautiful maiden. There is nothing becoming in us whatsoever. Instead, we are desperately criminal, and the only rescue grace would bring would demand storming the Bastille in which we are rightfully held. This is precisely what He did. “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possible dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8-9, NIV) And that’s an even better story. And it’s the one story that the world does not already have, and most needs to hear."

This video should be viewed by every American. As a public education student of California, I was taught by my teachers many things to the contrary of this video. In school, I was taught to believe that we are a Democracy and not a Republic. I was also taught that the Republicans of the past, such as Abraham Lincoln, were more like the Democrats of today. This video sums up in approximately 29 minutes what I should have learned in my government class. I know the length is long, but it’s worth it.

Things I Discovered in 2010

I realize that some of my favorite discoveries of 2010 will be old to many of you. But, don’t destroy my joy, these things are new to me so they are still shiny. These are in no particular order, however I know which ones I enjoy the most.

1. The Droid - I told myself I wouldn’t buy a smart phone, but… alas… there’s a sucker born every minute. The woman at the store told me that I could change the settings so the phone wouldn’t say “Droid!!” every time a text, email, or facebook notice came in. Silly lady, that’s the best part.

2. The IT Crowd - My friend introduced me to this television show. I watched only a couple of episodes and ordered the entire series. I believe in American Exceptionalism… except… maybe… just maybe… when it comes to British comedy shows the British take the cake, tea, and crumpets.

3. Despicable Me - I loved this movie. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a villain with a heart of gold… and… kittens… and… fluffy unicorns. Weird but true, in the past I’ve enjoyed the adult movie comedies such as Office Space more than children‘s movies. But, in my opinion Hollywood has done a crappy job with the adult comedies lately and has definitely stepped up their game with the kid’s cartoons.

4. iPad - This was a gift and I know there were lots of funny jokes about Apple choosing the name “iPad” on Twitter. But, man… oh… man… is it fun. Also, I was introduced to the vast World of Apps.

5. Pawn Stars - Part lessons in history, part lessons in negotiating prices, part freaky Las Vegas culture and part awesome. I’m not a fan of reality television shows (although I *could* possibly be familiar with TLC’s Baby Story and the first seasons of ABC’s The Bachelor) but this one is fun to watch.

6. Bully Beatdown - Who doesn’t love a bully getting his or her comeuppance? The rule of thumb is, the bigger they talk… the bigger they fall. The host Jason “Mayhem” Miller does a great job of being a commentator *and* he’s nice to look at. ;)

7. Better Than Sex Cake - I was at a restaurant drooling over their Italian Chocolate Cake that had toffee in its icing and the waitress told me she ate a better cake. My first thought is that it wasn’t possible. She wrote down the recipe and the rest is history.
Ingredients:
1 German chocolate or other chocolate cake, baked, 13x9x2-inch
3/4 cup fudge topping
3/4 cup caramel or butterscotch topping
3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
6 chocolate covered toffee bars
1 tub of whipped topping or 1 envelope Dream Whip, prepared with milk
Preparation:
Do not remove cake from pan. After the cake has cooled, make holes in the entire top of the cake using a large fork or the handle of a wooden spoon. Pour (one at a time) fudge, butterscotch, and condensed milk over the top of the cake and let each flavor soak in before adding the next. Crush 3 of the candy bars and sprinkle on the top. Frost the cake with the whipped topping and crush the 3 remaining toffee bars to decorate the top. Try to keep your hands off of this great cake before serving!

8. Wasabi in tubes - Yes, like toothpaste. I was only accustomed to wasabi at Asian restaurants and had no idea I could have it for my own devious enjoyment at home. I am a *huge* fan of spicy food. So this discovery made it much easier to add spice to random food items. I can’t disclose everything I’ve tried it on.

9. Hazel - Trust me. She’s worth watching.

10. Fondue - Sure, fondue was popular in the 1970’s with all other freaky deaky stuff. But, I like that it’s making a comeback… or… at least in my household. One of my favorite books on it is called Dip Into Something Different. Just because the title makes me laugh.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday that Ireland’s constitutional ban on abortion violates a pregnant woman’s rights. “Under Irish law dating back to 1861, a doctor and patient both could be prosecuted for murder if an abortion was later deemed not to be medically necessary.” One of the women, a Lithuanian woman living in Ireland, claimed her rights were violated because she was in remission from a rare form of cancer. Ireland’s defense claimed, “…that the woman should have petitioned the Irish High Court for the right to have an abortion in Ireland.” Health Minister Mary Harney said that, “…pregnant women suffering from cervical cancer, exceptionally high blood pressure or ectopic pregnancies already were receiving abortions in Irish hospitals.” Pregnancies that are at risk to the mother are already taking place in Ireland, but because of this rare case, abortion rights are pushed just a little bit more. Dr. Mary Favier, director of Doctors for Choice said, “Doctors can feel vindicated today. For the first time we can feel confident about discussing abortion as an option for women in medical need without fearing prosecution.” Abortion as an option for women in medical need, but how many abortion doctors will talk about the ramifications to a woman who wants an abortion that is not medically necessary?

The side effects of a legal abortion can cause life long mental and physical health problems and in rare cases death. Women face a number of possible physical complications as a result of legal abortion, including hemorrhaging that requires a transfusion, perforation of the uterus, cardiac arrest, endotoxic shock, major unintended surgery, infection resulting in hospitalization, convulsions, undiagnosed ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, cervical laceration, uterine rupture and death (Source: Warren Hern, "Abortion Practices," J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, 1990, p. 173 ff.)

Research published in the British Medical Journal concluded that women who abort a first pregnancy are at significantly greater risk of depression. An average of 8 years after their abortions, married women were 138 percent more likely to be at risk of long term clinical depression than similar women who carried their unintended first pregnancies to term. (Source: Reardon D.C., Cougle J.R., "Depression and Unintended Pregnancy In the National Longitundinal Survey of Youth," British Medical Journal, January 2002, 324:151-152.) After an abortion, women can experience psychological reactions such as guilt, regret, nervousness and difficulty sleeping. (Source: J.R. Ashton, "The psychosocial outcome of induced abortion," British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, December 1980, 87:1120-1121.)

The article finishes with this, “But William Binchy, a Trinity College Dublin law professor who advises Ireland's Pro Life Campaign, said… ‘What's at stake in this debate is the value of life. The sad experience is that once laws permitting abortion are introduced, they diminish the society's respect for the inherent value of every human life, born or unborn,’ Cardinal Sean Brady suggested that Irish people would never vote to permit abortion even for exceptional cases. ‘The direct destruction of an innocent human life can never be justified, however difficult the circumstances," he said. ‘We are always obliged to act with respect for the inherent right to life of both the mother and the unborn child in the mother's womb. No law which subordinates the rights of any human being to those of other human beings can be regarded as a just law.’

Beginning in summer 2011, the FDNY may begin charging a “crash tax.” The article states, “Starting next summer, the city plans to bill drivers in accidents that require an emergency response. The so-called “crash tax” works like this: A car fire or accident with injury would cost you $490. A car fire without injury, $415. And any vehicle accident without injury will run you $365... But under the plan, you’ll get charged even if the accident isn’t your fault.” (Emphasis mine)

I’m disturbed by this tax and it’s not because my state of California will most likely follow suit. One of the reasons is that once a tax is in place, it becomes easier to tax… just… a… little… bit… more. We have all seen the ridiculousness of the airlines and their fees. Want to board your flight early? Charge. Want to take your iPad? Charge. Want to have a seat assignment? Charge. Want to go to the restroom? Coin operated charge. Yes, really. Want to talk to an airport employee? Spirit Airlines considered having a fee for talking to an employee. It’s a slippery slope of fees to generate money.

Another issue I have is that this tax is generated from unfortunate circumstances rather than the logical privilege fees we have such as at the DMV, United States Postal Service and the horrible self-inflicted local Library fees. President George Washington knows what I’m talking about in library late fees. Where the privilege of driving and of mailing items to family and loved ones are reasonably charged fees, emergency services are paid for through taxes that fund fire and police departments. Our taxes already pay for these services and this “crash tax” is an unnecessary burden upon the citizens of New York. The Democrats have lovingly called Republicans the “Party of No.” In a way, we are the “Party of No.” No, we don’t want to be screwed over with ridiculous taxes that charge the innocent along with the guilty just to generate revenue for the Democrats’ out of control spending.

Earlier this year, Forbes compiled a list of the world’s most dangerous countries. Whenever I am presented with information, my mind instantly searches for patterns/connections… what do these countries have in common? After reading the Forbes list, I was curious about common themes in countries with other undesirable qualities, like poor standards of living, low life expectancy, high illiteracy rates, least amount of freedoms, etc. One of the most comprehensive studies on international liberty is conducted by Freedom House (see 2010 map/stats/info HERE). The two most common themes of the least desirable countries stood out like sore thumbs: totalitarianism and Islam.

What is the connection between Islam and totalitarian style governments like communism? Islam is geopolitical in nature, it encompasses and controls all facets of living: politics, finance, education, media, religion, etc. Totalitarian style governments, specifically those with state atheism, attempt to do the same. They are dangerous because they see no natural boundary to their ambitions. These ideologies control and manipulate their citizens, robbing them of individual liberties, especially freedom of religion, and specifically Judeo-Christian values. By ignoring these politically incorrect patterns, we are emboldening the enemies of liberty and thereby encouraging a more dangerous world.

As government expands, liberty retracts – this is NOT a coincidence.
